Google Play's app and games catalog — over 3 million titles at the time — was classified by a taxonomy owned by no one in particular, built up in pieces across disparate teams until the tech debt was expensive enough that no one wanted to touch it.
I helped rebuild it: leading the taxonomy redesign for Apps Editorial, serving as second reviewer for Games, and helping design the classification system — genres, sub-genres, mechanics, themes, monetization models, app features — that could empower search, recommendations, and store merchandising across Google Play.
